A nest for Mata... And a nursery school
During a meeting with the Director of the tea factory of the nearby Mata, the need emerged to support collecting mothers by setting up a nursery for babies and young children.
As in the rest of Africa, the women work keeping the children on their backs, exposing them to rain, sun and cold (Mata is located at 2000 m.s.l.m.). Older children are left on the ground and often alone.
Mabawa has enthusiastically accepted the collaboration. Thus a partnership with the factory was born, which gives work to 194 workers and over 1000 pickers and harvesters. In a short time a pilot class of about thirty children was started, but more than 90 are on the waiting list!
Thanks to the nest the children find a place where they can spend the day fed and cared for.
Two spaces with covered patio and verandas for outdoor games are already in use to accommodate them, with 30/40 children.
The carpenters in Nyamyumba have built the furniture, Mabawa has provided blankets, diapers, baby bottles and other materials. The children receive meals of cereal flour.
The interior design work was taken over by the factory management and the exterior work by Mabawa. As desired by both and in partnership, both financially and logistically.
From January 2014 the nursery school area was opened for older children.
In 2015 the nursery was adorned with murals made by VirginiaTech girls.
