A nursery for Mata... And a pre-school

During a meeting with the Director of the Tea factory in nearby Mata, the need emerged to support tea-picking mothers by setting up a nursery for newborns and toddlers.

As in the rest of Africa, women here work with their babies strapped to their backs, exposing them to rain, sun and cold (Mata is at 2000 m a.s.l). Older children are put down on the ground and often left alone.

Mabawa enthusiastically agreed to collaborate on this. Thus a partnership with the factory that provides jobs for 194 factory workers and over 1000 tea-pickers was born . In a short time, a pilot scheme with a class of about thirty children was set up, but there are over 90 on the waiting list!

Thanks to the nursery, babies have somewhere to spend the day where they are fed and looked after.

There are two rooms already in use, with a covered patio area and verandas for outdoor games, with capacity for 30/40 children.

Nyamyumba carpenters have built furniture and Mabawa has provided blankets, nappies, bottles and other materials. Children are fed cereal.

The interiors were kitted out by the factory management and the outdoor areas were funded by Mabawa. Both were in agreement, on the finances as well as on the logistics of the project.

A pre-school for toddlers was opened in January 2014
